The Finale!

Here is the final of my type specimen book. The point of the original project was to choose and display a font in a unique and intriguing booklet form. I choose the font Bodoni and displayed all its components within a magazine style booklet. The theme of the magazine revolved around a story I had written about the glamorization of sex in the media and its effect on the younger generations of society. To fulfill all the requirements of the font, I also added ads selling the Bodoni font within the magazine booklet. In the end I was very happy with the professional and clean look of my type specimen book. So, here it is.

Wrapping it Up: Type Specimen Book

Here are some of the final unseen pages of my type specimen book. The book is a total of 20 pages. It glorifies the font Bodoni and uses its splendor to tell a story about how the mainstream media is altering the standards of sex in the minds of the young.

The Revisions Begin.

One of the major changes I made to the the type specimen book is in regards to pages 10-11. I did not like the collage concept of page 11. It did not seem to match the cleanliness of the other pages. I decided to stick with a single image, like some on the other pages in the book. I wanted to continue cutting off the images of the girls at odd places in order to not show their entire body. My thought process is to engage the reader in the story by making them use their imagination to fill in the blanks. It fits in with the concept of my story and way the media directly drives images in the minds of viewers. Only now, I am altering the media concept by cutting off the entire image, allowing for more an exercise of fantasy than reality.

Revised Brain Shopping

I worked on the revising the visual hierarchy and cleaning up the body copy to enhance my overall clean look.

Brain Shopping Poster

I wanted to focus more on a clean design with an empahsis on verticals and simple lines.

More About Sex Selling…

I have developed three more spreads for my type specimen book. I think now I am focusing more on consistency. I would like all of the pages to flow and the concepts to correlate. I would also like to admit the vibe of a magazine-like style. My main focus however has been  on glamor and on typography. These are my goals.

More About Sex Sells.

Here is the next two spreads for my type specimen book. I have integrated one spread with the story and the ad, like in a magazine, as to follow my original style and audinece.  I added an icon at the bottom corner of very page that corresponded to the story. I have also placed the ad on a page in which there was a break within the story, this way not to split up the text.

Revised Shifting Emphasis. Remember.

I edited and revised two of projects’ spreads.

Buy Bodoni Ads

My solution to adding all the type requirements into the type specimen book so they wouldn’t look oddly and randomly placed within the article was to make three ads selling the font. Since my theme revolves around a feature article, I decided to make the layout follow a magazine-like style. Therefore magazines run ads to gain funds, and I decided to inject this feature into my mini-magazine as well. So here are my three ads for the font Bodoni.

New Theme for Type Specimen Book

After careful contemplation, I have decided to change the theme of my type specimen book. I am going to base it off an article I wrote that is semi-related to my previous topic for the book. The title of the article is called Sex Sells and Excels and investigates media acceptance of sex as a means to capture viewers, specifically teens. It also follows how the glamor of sex and the prevalence of pornography changes the image of women in society. I plan to have the layout of the book follow a magazine format and the typographic information to take the form of an ad for a font, in this case Bodoni. Below is the first spread of the book.
